RENT is widely considered to have boosted the popularity of musical theatre amongst younger generations, which is evidenced by the impact the show has had on the member's of Civic's 19-person cast, who range in age from teenagers to 40-somethings.
The show tells the story of a group of artists and musicians in New York's bohemian Alphabet City struggling to live and love, survive AIDS and pay their bills. Rent is currently the 9th-longest running musical in Broadway history, having wrapped a twelve-year run in late 2008. Along the way it picked up the Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Book and Best Score, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Musical and Outstanding Book.
All shows will be produced at Civic Theatre, 527 N. 19th Street, Allentown, PA. Free parking for the shows is available along Liberty and Allen Streets near 19th Street and in the Wachovia Bank parking lot at 19th and Liberty (after the bank is closed).
